The Nature Conservancy: China Great Rivers Project
The 3 great
international rivers are the Yangtze of China, Mekong
of Vietnam
(Laos and Thailand), and
Salween of Myanmar
.
The Great Rivers Project is a relatively new and under publicized mega project
of great national importance in China at the moment. The process began in 1998
when the YunNan Provincial Government invited The Nature conservancy
(based in Virginia, USA) to participate in a 2-year research study on the
strategic development for the mountainous northwestern region known for
its unique geological features, biodiversity and obscure ethnic cultures.
The Project hopes to address some of the most critical economical, environmental,
and ecological issues at the upper reaches of the three great rivers that impact
nearly 500 million people (about 10% of the world's population) who live along
the way in 5 nations.
