The DongBa Religion

DongBa is a phonic translation of a term in the NaXi Language
meaning teacher-priest. A DongBa Teacher-priest was the historian
of the NaXi culture, the interpreter of their ancient pictograph script,
and the administrator of their religious rites. Today, the term DongBa
applies to the indigenous religion, the rites, the teacher, the priest, and
the ancient pictograph script. The DongBa religion was an indigenous
primitive belief based on nature worship that had integrated religious rites
of Tibetan Lamaism (worship of deities), Taoism (worship of spirits) and
Confucianism (worship of ancestors).

The unique characteristic of the DongBa Religion is that it is not an
organized religion. There is no temple for the followers to maintain,
no priests for the believers to support, no doctrine for the devoted to attain.
